Mark Brewster of Hull, England and Allied Families in America

340 pages, 6 x 9" hard cover, acid free paper, photographs, illustrations, indexed.

This book is the history and genealogy of a Brewster family whose first documented progenitor is Jonathan Brewster b. ca. 1760. He resided near Waltham Parish, Lincolnshire, England, just a few miles distant from Immingham on the River Humber where the Pilgrims took ship for Holland in 1609.

The author has produced a very readable and factual family history and genealogy of this branch of Brewsters whose patriarch, Mark Brewster, was a lay preacher and follower of John Wesley. He encouraged his son, T. Atkey Brewster, to visit an Uncle Joseph who had settled in America in 1854.

Becoming an American citizen in 1897, young Atkey subsequently attended Garrett Biblical Insitiute at Northwestern University, and upon entering the Methodist ministry married Mabel Elizabeth Hiscock of Creston, Illinois.

The author gives an in-depth biographical record of Mark Brewster of Hull, England, which encompasses genealogical records of Mark's wife, Jane Ann Atkey, and her Atkey and Yelf antecedents in the Isle of Wight. Likewise, he treats the ancestral lines of Atkey's wife, Mabel E. Hiscock, including such surnames as Dare, Fowler, Hewitt, Potter and Carpenter.

The Appendix contains a treasure of personal letters and official records. Throughout the book there are eighteen charts that clearly define the genealogies and there are more than 90 photographs in addition to maps and illustrations. The biographical narratives on each direct-line ancestor provide for easy reading while giving a definitive history of the families involved. A complete name index of some 1,100 names makes for easy reference.

In this book the author has skillfully put together data from many primary and secondary sources gathered over a period of more than sixty years. The result is an eminently readable narrative which presents specific genealogical data in an orderly and easily followed format.

Some of the surnames in this book are: Atkey, Carpenter, Dare, Fowler, Hiscock, Hewitt, Potter Yelf and others.
