Early members of the Barry family were pioneers in the development of the United States. They sought new lands to open as frontiers moved west, often picking up and moving west two and three times in a lifetime, each time settling in relative wilderness. As each area developed, the desire to move on arose, and off they went to new lands: westward across New York state from Stillwater to Palatine/Oppenheim to Yates, their children in turn moving on to Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, California, Oregon, and other states, sometimes taking two years to make the migration.
Benjamin Barry, the earliest known of our Barry ancestors, was unable to sign his name. As a result his name usually appeared in official records with the spelling "Berry." Before his death, however, Benjamin and his children evidently settled on "Barry" as the proper spelling, and so it has appeared in records since, with a few exceptions. All Barry's familiar with the need to correct the "Berry" spelling others seem to find so natural.
When Benjamin first moved to the town of Palatine in Montgomery County, NY, Palatine extended from the Mohawk River to the Canadian border. Oppenheim was later formed from a portion of Palatine, and today Oppenheim is in Fulton County.
Near the beginning of our research on the Barry family, the compiler was given a Xerox of an old typewritten genealogy, over 100 pages but with a few pages missing, compiled in the 1920s and 1930s by Roy Frank Barry of Albion, MI. This marvelous work provided a foundation for the research that was to follow, actually making it possible for the present work to be as complete as it is (though actually it is far from a complete compilation of Benjamin's descendants). Although Roy Barry's work is almost entirely undocumented and is not without error, it has been a valuable guide to the various branches of the family.
This current work represents an expansion, and in some cases a condensation and correction of Roy Barry's work.
Many living descendants of Benjamin Barry and their spouses have contributed information to the compiler which was not in Roy F. Barry's genealogy, extending generations and updating the earlier information.
