This book follows Samuel Dean (ca 1751-1826) from his fathers home in Washington County Maryland to the South Carolina upcountry in 1787. Later Pendleton District and Anderson County. The first chapter is an overview of Samuel's father Richard Dean (1701-1788) who is first located in 1747 in what was Prince George's County. Later became Frederick and then Washington County.

Samuel Dean married Gwendolyn James, daughter of Griffith James of the same area. They had 10 children and this book follows all lines of the family for up to 6 generations. Some of the children remained in South Carolina while others migrated into the western territories.

1) Thomas, married Mary Williford and Elizabeth Seawright. Remained in SC.
2) Miriam, married William McGregor. Remained in SC.
3) Joseph, married Elizabeth Edmondson. Removed to TN and MS. Samuel, married unknown first wife and then Perthenia Edmondson. Removed to AL.
5) Mary, married Eli Hillhouse. Removed to AK.
6) John, married Polly Herrin. Removed to TN.
7) Richard, married Cynthia Elizabeth Jenkins. Remained in SC.
8) Griffith, married Annis Bishop. Removed to MS.
9) Moses, married Narcissa Lewis. Remained in SC.
10) Aaron, married Meekness Day. Removed to MS.
