This book is a history and genealogy of the Elam family in America, descendants of Gilbert, Ann, and Martin Elam, early residents of colonial Virginia who migrated from Yorkshire in England in the mid 1600s. Emphasis is on the descendants of Martin through the lineage of his son, John and John's son William. The book focuses on William's descendants, narrowing to John H. Elam of Mississippi and Texas, who was the author's grandfather.

The book includes significant information about the geography, history and socio-economic conditions of the times and places where the families lived as well as genealogical lineages. Major problems of research and indentification of Elam lineages are noted. Use is made of oral traditions as well as the documentary record. The author is a retired professor of history and spent nearly ten years researching and writing the book, using resources in local, state, and national depositories in all the areas covered.
