The Granthams

Seven Generations of American Frontiersmen

264 pages, 6 x 9", hardcover, acid-free paper, photographs, maps and illustrations, indexed.

The book covers the genealogy of a Grantham family that emigrated from England to Virginia in the 1600s; then emigrated to Wayne County, North Carolina about 1750; pushed on to Robeson County, North Carolina, in 1770; emigrated to Arkansas (by way of Louisiana) about 1830; continued on to Texas in the 1850s; and finally reached New Mexico in the early 1900s. Equally important, the book provides a narrative of the political, economic and social history of the times and places in which these successive generations of Granthams lived. The Granthams describes in detail how the family followed the emerging frontiers of the American southwest and relates many of the details of frontier life. It concludes with an account of the emergence of the family from the ranks of yeoman farmers into successful professional careers in Texas and New Mexico, the last frontier. It also identifies a number of individuals and families of collateral lines.
