Johann Frantz Hammer

Palatine Pioneer in Pennsylvania and Maryland and His Descendants

706 pages, 8 1/2 x 11", hard cover, photographs, illustrated, indexed.

This family history/genealogy traces the life of Johann Frantz Hammer (later Francis) from his place of origin in Pferdsfeld, Germany through his immigration to America in 1747; his period of residence in York County, Pennsylvania; his move to the Taneytown area of Frederick County, Maryland in 1765; and his life there until his death in 1802.

Chapter II covers his eight children with emphasis on his three sons, Jonas, Tobias, and Michael. By 1810, all three sons had moved to Bedford County, Pennsylvania where they lived for the remainder of their lives.

Chapters II through V cover the third, fourth and fifth generation descendants of the progenitor. Descendants of fifth generation members who are not covered in later chapters are dealt with and listed in an expanded Chapter V. Chapters VI, VII, and VIII are limited to the sixth, seventh and eighth generation descendants of Captain Hezekiah Hammer and Sheriff John Beisel Hammer. The listing of children and descendants of later generation members in Chapters V and VIII in effect further extends coverage in some cases to the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth generations.

This is not simply a genealogical listing of the descendants of the progenitor. Rather, it is a family history presented in a narrative form with biographies of each family member for whom we have information. Included are photographs of family members along with maps and photographs showing where the ancestors lived. The lines of some female descendants have been dealt with rather extensively.

Some of the surnames in this book are: Allison, Barefoot, Beisel, Blackburn, Black, Brown, Bowers, Corle, Crist, Harbaugh, Harr, Hott, Ickes, Ling, Middleton, Miller, Mitchell, Mock, Nicodemus and others too numerous to mention.
