The book details what is known of the descendants of William Hannum, thought to have been a passenger on the Mary and John, which sailed from Plymouth, England, and landed in Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1630. From Dorchester, William Hannum was part of the group that left Dorchester to found Windsor, Connecticut. He later was part of the group that settled Northampton, Massachusetts. His descendants remained in central Massachusetts for several generations, but by the mid 1800s a number of the descendants had migrated to central and western New York, Ohio, Illinois and to points beyond. Beyond Dorchester, Windsor and Northampton, prominent locations include many towns in Hampden and Hampshire Counties in Massachusetts; Lunenbug, Vermont; Cuyahoga, Geauga and Fairfield Counties in Ohio; Courtland, Genesee and Chautauqua Counties in New York; LaSalle, Putnam and Peoria Counties in Illinois; and Denver, Colorado. Chapter 1 is a compilation of what is known of the Hannum/Hannam/Hanham families in England prior to the mid-17th century, and discusses the potential ancestry of the immigrant. The remainder of the book deals with the descendants of this William Hannum through the mid 1940s. This is one of two significant Hannum families in the United States, the other being the descendants of John and Margery Hannum of Chester, PA. There is no identified connection between these two families. The book includes over 100 photographs, an every name index, and a place index.
