William Leech, the son of Thomas Leech and Phebe Penrose, married Jane Garretson, the daughter of Cornelius Garretson and Margaret Atkinson, at York, Pennsylvania, in 1800. In 1816 William and Jane moved, with their children, to Columbiana County, Ohio, first settling on a farm that adjoined the Pennsylvania line. One of this book's 15 chapters is devoted to this couple's nine children and later generations down to the present one in some instances.

Fourteen chapters deal with William and Jane's ancestral families. Seven of William's great-grandparents and all eight of Jane's were Quakers (Friends). At least seven of the combined total of 16 great-grandparents were born in Ireland; the others were born in England, Wales, Pennsylvania, or Delaware. All emigrated from their native lands to the American Colonies between 1657 and 1736.
