Dr Guilford, author of The Ancestry of Dr J P Guilford, Vol I (pub 1990) and The Monroe Book (pub 1993), has devoted a number of years to the search for the ancestors of the father of her children, Dr Franklin B McClung, deceased. The results appear in this 760 page account. The ancestry is rather typically American, consisting of a wide variety of nationalities: English, Irish, Welsh, French, German, and Dutch. Immigrant ancestors settled at various times in colonial New England, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Virginia.

Since a number of the immigrants were of the Quaker persuasion, an introductory section provides the reader with a history of The Society of Friends and because quite a few originated in Holland, another section provides a description of the manner in which Dutch names originated and developed as the Dutch were incorporated into this English-speaking country. A list of the English equivalents of Dutch names also appears in this section.

The book contains an every-name index as well as a complete collection of pedigree charts depicting the ancestry of its subject.
