Text about John D. McLean, the immigrant, appears in the chapter titled "Generation One". The lands purchased and conveyed by him are described. In the year 1800, the first log meeting house of the Harmony Presbyterian Church was built on his land. Today, following three site changes and two name changes, the church is now First Presbyterian Church, Ellerbe, NC. John D. McLean provided for his own "Social Security" in 1845. See photograph on page 13 of a loan made by him to a grandson to provide this security. At this time he was infirm and not able to write his hame. Copies of his signature appear in the book.
Text written about, and photos of many descendants of John D. McLean appear in chapters "Generation Two" through "Generation Six".
Another chpater, "Preachers" has text about and photos of six ordained ministers who are descendants of John D. McLean.
In the 1970's the writer interviewed four descendants of John D. McLean who shared family information. A short summary of these interviews begins on page 103 in the chapter named "Recollections".
On page 107 the chapter "Miscellanea" begins. Photos of many documents pertaining to the McLeans appear in "Miscellanea". Several of the original documents are in the possession of the writer. In addition, there are several photos of persons in this chapter.
End sheets of the book show portions of an official 1886 map of Richmond County, NC. The residences of many rural residents are shown on this map. The residences of "Mrs. McLean", (widow of Duncan McLean, Jr.), and "S. McLean", (Solomon McLean), are indicated by inserted arrows. Ellerbe was not in existence as a town in 1886. The area named "Fair Ground" was where the early Scottish settlers of Richmond County held fairs and is now the site of Ellerbe, NC.
A computer generated list of the descendants of John D. McLean begins on page 121 and ends on page 186. This list contains the names of over 900 descendants of John D. McLean. This list will enable any descendant whose name appears in the list to trace his or her lineage back to John D. McLean.
An index of all persons listed in the book begins on page 187 and ends on page 203.
