From England to America
266 pages, 6 x 9", hard cover, acid free paper, photographs, indexed.
The descendants of John Payn who lived in Frittenden and Tenterden, Kent, England, at about 1420 to 1463, are traced down through his grandson of the fifth generation, Moses Paine, 1581-1643, coming to America with his family in 1638, settling in Braintree, MA, then through nine more generations of Paines/Paynes. For a number of generations the Payne family played important roles in early Braintree history. The early 1800s found members of the family in Ashfield, MA, then on to Western New York and Chautauqua Co., in the towns of Cassadaga, Stockton and Burnham.
This is a very readable family story and genealogy as the author has added cultural and historical background for the setting of each generation, helpful maps as well as some choice and appropriate pieces of poetry (some taken from a family scrapbook) for chapter headings, and used many vintage and contemporary photos.
Some of the surnames in this book are: Adams, Bass, Beebe, Billing, Burnham, Clayville, Crofton, Gittings, MacCubbin, Penniman, Pierce, Ruggles, Sheafe, Veasey, Young and others.
