This is the first Shuttleworth history I can find published. Although many cousins have tried, most have passed away before publishing their findings. Mona Mattingly did My Southern Findings and sent it to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Utah. She covers the line of Notley, our Archibald's brother. It has some big gaps I could not fill nor could researchers I hired (especially our grandmothers).
I thought for sure this history was jinxed when my heart went upsy. Well I got it fixed and when I got on my feet this history had to be done. I could have waited and done more maybe. I could have finished back to England. One does need to stop some place, so here it is!
This is the line of Archibald and Margaret the, first son of Phillip 1748 and Laurena, that settled Northwestern Virginia now Morgantown, West Virginia, at a very early time. It follows their children and grandchildren to the early 1900s. I have made it easy enough to read and know of their roots. Several cousins are working on their roots now, they can pick up the family and go on about 100 years. I sure hope they do. This history will never be completed, but can be added to from now on. I put lots of pictures in, but none of the really early forefathers. Joshua-Mary Jane Shuttleworth's house burned in the early 1900s and everything of my family was lost. This is how I put my mother was Edra L. Shuttleworth Robe D/O Joseph-Emma Guthrie Shuttleworth S/O Joseph and Mary Jane Moran Shuttleworth S/O Archibald-Margaret Shuttleworth S/O Phillip Laurena Shuttleworth S/O Phillip-Anna Thomas Shuttleworth?
Now when I was finished, this statement came to my attention from Col. George Washington's biography. He sent eleven riflemen back to care for the wounded. This was at Washington's defeat at Fort Necessity 1754 in July. In Rebecca Shuttleworth Lowe's Bible it states these "men became lost and spent the winter of 1754-1755 on Decker Creek now Monongalia County, West Virginia." Rebecca married Phillip Lowe and was Archibald's sister. I'm told by one researcher the roster for this trip has been lost. I shall continue to work on this and if I find more it will be in the next Shuttleworth history.
The story of Phillip and Anne Thomas was in D.D. Shuttleworth's writings, but he had Archibald and Anne, so when I disproved that Archibald I put the lore away, but with Phillip it all matches. I find five older male Shuttleworths-Phillip's brothers? and two females in Maryland--Phillip's sisters? There must be a record of his being a slave master. There is no record of him coming into America so perhaps he was a cabin boy who jumped ship or was sold as an indentured servant? Will we ever know? Here's the place to start....
