A Wampler Family History, With Allied Families of Kemper, Zumbrum, Angel, Craumer, Mayer and Ruhlman

444 pages, 8 1/2 x 11", hardcover, photographs, illustrated, indexed.

Chapters 1-2 (74 pages) survey the European origins of the Wamplers, the migration of two brothers with their families to Pennsylvania, and the first three generations in America. Wampler forebears first appear in 16th-century Bern Canton, Switzerland, and later in Alsace. Hans Peter Wampler (1701-1749), arrived in Pennsylvania in 1741, settling in Lebanon County; his brother Johann Christian came to Pennsylvania in 1747, settling in York County.

Several hundred descendants of the two immigrant brothers are followed into the early 1800s. By then, many had migrated to Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio and Indiana. Hans Peter's sons, Michael and George, settled in southwest Virginia; son Peter settled in Maryland. John Wampler (1768-1845) established a flourishing branch of the family in Shenandoah Valley, VA. Children of immigrant Johann Christian stayed in York County, but his grandchildren scattered to other parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Sketches of the 192 great-grandchildren of the immigrant brothers often include data about their children and grandchildren -- thus extending the chronicle well into the 19th century.

Chapters 3-9 focus on the family of William Wampler (1813-1886), a native of York County, PA, who married Juliana Zumbrum. Their descendants are traced to contemporary times.

Chapters 10-19 discuss the ancestors of William J. Wampler (1838-1906) and wife, leading to Charles Angel, Jacob Craumer and John Zumbrum of Maryland: and John Mayer, George Ruhlman and John Kemper of Pennsylvania. "...A work commendable for its thoroughness, clarity and attractive presentation." -- Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin, Spring 2001.
