704 pages, 6 x 9" hardcover, acid-free paper, photographs, sketches and maps, indexed. Forward by Brent Holcomb.
This book contains information on the Witt Family whose origins were in South Carolina. Heidelberg, Germany was their original homeland and their name was Wild. The names of the Witt ancestors have been found as early as 1630 in the Reformed Church parish records which survive from Ziegelhausen and Neckargemund, Baden.
The South Carolina immigrants left from Rotterdam on the ship, Upton and arrived in Charles Town, South Carolina during a hurricane on September 15, 1752. Given 250 acres of land in the back country of South Carolina near Prosperity, they started a new life in America. For reasons explained in the book, their name became Witt in America.
During the 1850s some of the family resettled near Lake City, Columbia County, Florida. They were founders of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the first of this demonination in Florida. Other members of the family went to Arkansas, and Louisiana.
Based on five years of research by three authors, this book documents historical facts, family oral history, stories and genealogical information in one publication with a surname index. This book contains 6,500 names and covers a period of 15 generations.
