In the late 1800s Mrs. Ruth Moore Young lived on the mountain across from the place where the Ellijay Baptist Church now stands. There was no organized church in the community at that time.
The hill was a gathering place for the young men of the community. Mrs. Young could see the fires they built at night, and she knew the young men, including her sons were drinking and gambling there. She asked that when she died, she could be buried on the hill and maybe they would stop going there.
In 1893, one year after Ruth Young was buried on the hill, work was started on the first Ellijay Baptist Church. Five years later, in 1898, Leander Young, Ruth Young's son, was ordained to the ministry in that church. -- From A Century of Service 1904-2004
The life of Eva Jane Houston Gibson and her 100th birthday were celebrated on February 15, 2003. Mrs Gibson was a faithful Sunday School teacher at Liberty Baptist Church. Her husband Carroll was a deacon and Sunday School teacher, and was ordained at Liberty Baptist Church on July 24, 1949. Both of her sons, Wiley and Carson, became Macon County pastors.-- From A Century of Service 1904-2004
In 1951 a Men's Brotherhood was formed at the First Baptist Church with an estimated forty members enrolled. This organization has helped many causes of the Macon Baptist Association, as well as extending its ministries to such causes as disaster relief, housing, witnessing, support for the Royal Ambassadors and missions in foreign countries. The Brotherhood organization now has a disaster trailer, ready for service, which can be taken anywhere there is a need. -- From A Century of Service 1904-2004
